First day of my new non-negotiable

I added a 5-minute-general-pick-up to my list of non-negotiables this week. I did this today right before lunch. My house is quite clean right now, so I was tempted to fall back into my normal habit of thinking it was good enough. I want to catch the little things before they turn into big things.

The little things I caught were:

Put away the two pairs of shoes by the backdoor before they turned into a pile of 20 pairs that spread across the entire room.

Put away the box of blocks that were in the middle of the otherwise clean floor. I’m so used to seeing the floor in this room completely covered that I actually consciously thought that one box of blocks wasn’t a big deal.

I had plenty of time in the five minutes to distribute the new household junk acquired at the birthday party to its proper places. Normally, this might take me several weeks.

I found that many of these tasks involved me going against my natural instinct. It is my natural instinct to think that very small clutter isn’t that big of a deal. This is my problem and why it is my natural instinct to be a slob.

Small amounts of clutter left alone turn quickly into large amounts of clutter.

Other things I’ve done today:

Made bed (unlike yesterday).

Checked bathroom floors for stray items. (Amazingly, they have stayed cleared by picking up small things as soon as I see them.)

Emptied dishwasher.

Cleaned kitchen.

Swept kitchen.

Wiped down potty when the pee-smell got to me while reading a book to my daughter while she did her business. Thanks to my two little boys, the pee smell was already there after that bathroom was scrubbed down so well only three days ago. But hey, one quick wipe of the potty’s pee-collecting-spots, and the smell was gone.

Go me!

Panic

September 14, 2009 By Dana White | 6 Comments

1share 1 0 0I got into bed last night and was startled to notice, AFTER getting in, that my bed was not made. I panicked. I had taken a Sunday nap, and thought maybe that was why, but could see that my husband’s side was unmade as well. I hadn’t made the bed at all […]

Menu Plan Monday – Woohoo!

September 14, 2009 By Dana White | 2 Comments

1share 0 0 1 So strange that I’m this excited over menu planning. When Laura over at orgjunkie.com says that menu planning is a great way to start getting organized, she’s right. I’m not sure why, but she is. It actually seems that my kitchen stays cleaner when I have meals planned. This is a […]

My New Non-Negotiable Task for this Week

September 13, 2009 By Dana White | 2 Comments

0shares 0 0 0I’ve been thinking a lot about this one. Like I’ve said the last two weeks, it is difficult to not want to add 5 new things a week. But taking it slowly is working so far. I don’t want to mess with what’s working. Two weeks ago I added sweeping the kitchen […]

Lest I be prideful . . .

September 13, 2009 By Dana White | 21 Comments

57shares 57 0 0 If you’ve been reading the last few days, you have noticed that I have been quite proud of myself that I got “most” of my house clean for this weekend of birthday celebrations. I think that’s one of my problems. When I clean, I expect a parade in my honor. I […]

The down side of cleanliness

September 12, 2009 By Dana White | 7 Comments

5shares 3 0 2Here’s the part I dislike about having my house as clean as it is today: I turn into Crazy Mommy. DON’T BRING YOUR TOYS INTO THE LIVING ROOM! WHY WOULD YOU PLAY IN THE RAIN AND THEN WALK ACROSS THE LIVING ROOM! ETC.ETC.ETC! I would like to achieve a place of balance. […]

Goofy lightbulb moment

September 12, 2009 By Dana White | 11 Comments

3shares 3 0 0I love being a mom. I love being home because it is my passion to give my children the freedom to be imaginative, creative, and independent at their own personal pace. I love having a fridge with water in the door because it means my kids can get themselves a drink of […]

Daily Checklist for my crazy cleaning day

September 11, 2009 By Dana White | 5 Comments

0shares 0 0 0I am seriously exhausted. Today I: Made bed. (Just a note that I got up reaaalllly early because I couldn’t sleep, and when I went back in after my husband was up, I totally noticed how awful the bed looked unmade. Huge step for me!) Emptied dishwasher. Made lunches because I forgot […]

Clean and Shiny!

September 11, 2009 By Dana White | 13 Comments

0shares 0 0 0The house AND me. I have scrubbed and sweated and then had to disinfect myself because of all those disgusting bathroom germs. Maybe that’s part of my germaphobia/slobbishness together problem. I can’t clean behind the toilet unless I can take a very hot shower immediately after. There are very good things about […]
