Dreams of Organization - A Slob Comes Clean

I woke up this morning with renewed resolve.  I’ve been at this deslobification/blogging thing for one full year as of today.

While life is never truly “normal” (and I’m thankful for that), the school year is as normal as we get around here.  So, it’s now or never.  Time to start making some more real progress on this “journey to an orderly home” thing.

I lay in bed, waiting for the alarm to go off.  I actually began to get excited about tackling all of the things that I’d been putting off over the summer.

That suitcase full of winter clothes that I never put away after our trip to Colorado, and that I’ve been tripping over every single night on my way to the bathroom?  The room that I neglected for a month and let slip into total chaos?  That huge pile of “stuff” that is on the floor by my side of the bed?

The list in my head began to get out of hand.  And I felt a little panicked.  My natural instinct was to push these thoughts out and accidentally-on-purpose forget about them.

But I took a breath.

And I got up, walked to the laundry room and changed over a new load . . . getting Laundry Day off on the right foot.

I went to the kitchen, warmed up the pancakes and baked oatmeal that were ready to go thanks to our recent Freezer Cooking Day.

I went through our morning routine, glad that I had made lunches and put out clothes last night.

And after dropping off the boys and doing some grocery shopping, I came home and kept chugging along.  Kitchen cleaned.  Floor swept.  Laundry Day continued.  Piles noticed and cleared.

I dream of being organized, but since it wasn’t achieved in complete-and-irreversible-perfection last year, I doubt it is going to happen today.

But it’s better.

And I’m good with that.

It’s New (School) Year’s Eve!

August 22, 2010 By Dana White 5 Comments

0shares 0 0 0School starts tomorrow morning. I’m doing my best to adjust my mindset. I’m sure I’ll blather on and on about it for several days, but for today, in the spirit of what all mothers know is the true time for resolutions, I thought I’d share a few that I’ve been thinking about. […]

HOW Did I Let This Happen . . . Again?

August 20, 2010 By Dana White 6 Comments

2shares 1 0 1 I don’t feel like writing a post tomorrow. Yes, I know that tomorrow hasn’t happened yet, but I already feel the donwannas coming on. And they’re coming on strong. I always go into a funk when it’s time for school to start, and going to Meet the Teacher Night tonight made […]

Resisting the Allure of (Unneeded) School Supplies

August 19, 2010 By Dana White 19 Comments

429shares 410 2 17 Tonight, we meet the boys’ teachers. As my 8yo says, “Meet the Teacher Night is just a cruel reminder that school is about to start.” So, today we’ve been busy labeling and packing school supplies into backpacks. We also made one last trip to the store for the last few items […]

How I Learned That It’s Okay to Use Less Soap in the Dishwasher

August 18, 2010 By Dana White 5 Comments

77shares 77 0 0It seems like lately I’ve mentioned my nightly-running-of-the-dishwasher habit quite a bit. That’s probably because it’s the only thing I’ve been truly consistent on lately. Thankfully, it’s also the one that makes the biggest difference. Anyway, I’ve learned that you don’t have to fill the soap-thingamajig completely full. See, I’m a couponer, […]

Daily Checklist – Less Than a Week Before School Starts

August 17, 2010 By Dana White 2 Comments

0shares 0 0 0Summer is almost over.  Not the hot weather part, just the fun part. My goal is to have a normal summer week.  Lots of play-time, swimming every day, etc. Also, I’m trying to little by little recover from summer’s chaos-inducing-lack-of-routine.  I wouldn’t trade a minute, but it definitely makes it much more […]

843shares 279 1 563 Total departure from the “journey to an orderly home” thing here. But hey, when you have a sudden inspiration to make your very favorite and easy dip, you actually have the ingredients on hand, and you have a blog. . . it kind of makes sense that you should take a […]

It’s Official! My Car is Not the World’s Messiest!

August 16, 2010 By Dana White 18 Comments

0shares 0 0 0Somehow, that feels like an accomplishment. First, let me admit that my car (actually a pre-millenial Suburban) is messy. I have cleaned it out twice this summer, BIG cleanouts. But as I’m learning with my house, big clean-outs are not the answer to clutter problems. It’s those pesky, small-but-consistent clean-outs that make […]
