One of my very favorite things about directing the yearly musicals I do with my kids’ show choir is the conversations about my age that inevitably happen. At some point (when I’m sweating profusely from demonstrating a dance move or forgetting a kid’s name or am just flat out exhausted), I blame my current issue on my age. And every time (EVERY time) the kids gasp in shock. They had no idea I was so old! They really thought I was in my early thirties!! Or late twenties!! Or they assumed I was fifteen!!! (Even though my 12 year old child is in the play with them . . . ) Seriously, this is one of the biggest perks of that job!!
I’m 42, and I’m more than happy to be 42. With my forties comes a certain, ummm . . . attitude. It happened to my own mother. (Oh my, did it ever.)
It’s a take-it-or-leave-it, I-am-what-I-am, who-has-the-energy-to-pretend-to-have-answers-when-she-totally-doesn’t kind of thing.
It’s one of the reasons why, even though I still cringe when someone asks me what I “do” and I have to share my deep dark slob secret with them, I’m glad I get to write about something that lets me feel absolutely no need to pretend I’ve got it all together. (Whatever “it” is.)
Over time, through much resistance, I’ve accepted that I have something to offer the hopeless homemaker. I can identify and explain the basics for bringing and keeping a home out of Disaster Status in a way that actually makes sense to others to whom this stuff does NOT come naturally.
But I get questions I simply can’t answer. Or won’t answer. Because I base all of my strategies/advice on what I’ve personally found to work in my home, and I may not have actually made that thing work in my own home yet. (And may never.)
Like how often should you clean this, that, or the other. Or how do you keep track of the BIG cleaning tasks like scrubbing down air vents and such? (Ummm, I don’t?) Or how to menu plan using only whole foods?
Or questions about blending organizing and home decor. Hahahahaha!!! Those questions are usually from people who just landed here and haven’t looked around yet!
