Meal Planning is a Detail

It’s Day 3 of October’s 31 Days of Details.

It’s also the day when I plan my menus.  A very important day.

I can’t even express how crucial meal-planning has been in my deslobification process.  When I plan our menu, our week goes (more) smoothly.

When I don’t . . . it’s chaotic.

At least during that crazy hour between afternoon and evening, when my family expects to eat.

I know.  The audacity.

Somehow, even when I don’t follow the plan exactly due to time, mood, forgetting-to-buy-a-key-ingredient, etc. it still helps to have a plan.

I think it’s the Think Ahead Factor that I tend to avoid.  When I’m planning, I think about the week.  Tuesday may be a PTO meeting, or Thursday may include a baseball practice.  If I’ve planned, I’ve considered the kinds of meals that work best on those nights.  And the chances of hitting up Little Ceaser’s are smaller.

Not gone, but smaller.

So, here’s my plan for this week.

Monday – Tacos (8yo asked if he could cook.  Ummmm, yes please?)

Tuesday – Crock Pot BBQ Chicken Sandwiches

Wednesday – Round Steak in the Crockpot (Wed. will be extra busy, so this will be nice to have ready when I come home.)

Thursday – Chicken Stir Fry

Friday – School fundraiser

Saturday – Cheeseburger Soup

I’ll be linking this up to Orgjunkie.com for Menu Plan Monday.

Have you voted for A Slob Comes Clean today?  Wonder what I’m talking about?

Help! I have people coming over to my house in 6 weeks. I need some DETAILED (get it? HA!) instructions on how to get this home of mine party ready. Some background: I have three kids 4.5 and younger. Party is for baby’s first birthday. I like to make their birthday cakes. 4 bed, 2.5 bath, den, laundry, kitchen, breakfast, play room, and one very large, useless room (packed with junk) that is the first thing you see when you walk in my back door. I know you are busy, but I just don’t know where to start. Help!

Hi Dori, here’s the link to my post about just that. It also includes a link to a printable checklist. Believe me, I feel your pain and know exactly what you’re going through!

I agree, life is so much easier when I have my meals planned out. I try to do 2 weeks at a time, because of our pay schedule. This lets me do all the shopping for 2 weeks & helps me to stay on budget(most of the time) I also like the idea of not having to scramble around for dinner ideas @ 5:00,when people are starving & nothing is defrosted.Just because I have writen this on paper doesn’t mean I can’t switch things around if I need to(in case something comes up OR I’m just not feeling that particular meal today)

I am a meal planner too, but I plan my meals for the whole month. It isn’t always strict or set in stone, but it helps me get my brain together for the whole month’s grocery budget. I recheck it often just to see if anything has changed in our schedule. It took some time to learn how to make it work for the entire month, but it has helped immensely in keeping my sanity and saving us money.

I totally agree. I haven’t been menu planning much at all over the last several months, and it really throws us off. I wish I could just get my act together.

Used your cook it all up chicken method. Dinner was so much quicker to toss together. Litterally tossing stuff in a pot and stirring.
    You’re awesome

Oh this makes me so happy to hear! It does make a huge difference in my willingness to make dinner at the end of a busy day!

I started from the beginning of the blog a couple of weeks ago and something has been nagging at me when I see your Meal Plan posts. When you don’t make what you planned, does that always mean fast food, pizza etc or do you make something else? I know it’s a little silly but it’s been on my mind. Lol Love the podcast, the book and now the blog!!
