What have I decluttered?
I could show a picture of my garage, but it’s just too embarrassing. I’ve showed some doozies, so you know it’s bad.
But it’s bad because it’s the stuff I’m putting in our garage sale (for which we now have a date on the calendar). So although full-to-the-max and with only a single-file path to get out to the driveway, I’m proud of what it represents.
Amy at The Finer Things in Life is hosting a declutter challenge. Her goal is to declutter 730 things in 365 days. I’m hoping that next year, I’ll be at the point where I only need to declutter 730 things in 2011. Multiply her number by 50, and you might be closer to my goal.
But I am extremely proud of the decluttering I’ve done since the start of the blog, and definitely since the beginning of 2010.
Here are a few highlights.
I decluttered under the bathroom cabinets, even the kids’. Scary. Lots of stuff in the trash and quite a bit to the garage sale stash.
I decluttered kitchen cabinets and pots and pans. Why, oh why do I not immediately remove things when I decide that I don’t like them or won’t use them anymore?
I poked my fingers on all of the tacks spilled into each and every one of the four full-to-the-top junk drawers in the kitchen. But I’m loving that they are now so clean. My 6yo even ran to tell me that the drawer was cleaned out when he went looking for a pencil. Really!?! That’s fantastic!
And then there was the great Craft Closet Clean-out! I parted with many craft items that once seemed like a great idea. WHen they’ve been sitting in a drawer untouched for more than 5 years, it’s time to let go.
Last week I parted with my excess of dishes. This one was very difficult. There was a point this weekend when there was only one stack of 8 plates left in the cabinet, and it made me feel panicky.

Wow! You really got a lot accomplished in January! How rewarding that your 6 yo noticed a difference too!! 🙂
Wow, you've been busy! Keep up the good work.
You're doing a great job!

WOw! That is awesome! Great job!
You have been so busy! We have several "junk drawers" in our home, too. 🙂
Your blog articles have helped me. Over the last 6 months, I have downsized wardrobe (need to do it again), cleaned out the clutter from my main living space, kitchen, dining room, BOTH guestrooms and all but 1 corner of MASTER bedroom – bathrooms had already been done, and I did the little closet that had wrapping paper, gift bags, tags, emergency gifts, etc (plus was the repository for the blue velcro walking splint, knee brace, ankle brace and arm sling (I’m a klutz)).
Next is main cost closet, linen closet, laundry cabinets, and the dreaded butlers pantry and food pantry. My home was clean enough to have unexpected overnight guests, an impromptu cocktail party ( arranged, prepped, cooked and laid out for in less than 5 hours), and to host our card group (because my house was clean)! It is nice to lay hands on serving trays, know what food I had in my freezer , fridge and pantry when I had to plan on the fly as I was heading to the grocery.
I have time to sit and read, instead of look around and always be overwhelmed – I feel accomplished! I need to remember this feeling so I can stay with it!
Thank you!!
