October’s Decluttering Update

No lie.  I just typed “August’s Decl” and then caught myself.

Time Passage Awareness?  Not really my thing.

And evidently, putting posts in my decluttering category when doing a month of details really isn’t my thing either.

But . . . since I decluttered my Donation Spot at the end of September, I was able to take a picture of what’s in it right now and know that was October’s bounty.

Which isn’t much.  But it’s something, and for a crazy month when I felt like I was swimming through jello on most days, I’ll take it.

What’s in the box?  Oh . . . things like the shoes that were too small (but I lost the receipt and couldn’t return), freebie water-bottles found in the bottom of a laundry basket (that was full of dirty laundry), and too-small clothes purged during laundry folding sessions.

And a lidless travel mug.  Which is a useless travel mug. Which reminds me . . . did you read that post?  It was one of my weekend posts during the 31 Days of Details, and I always resented that it ran on a weekend when blog traffic is low, since I rather liked it.

Yes.  There’s my short decluttering update for the month.  I had to type it up in a hurry since I procrastinated on learning a dance that my son’s show choir teacher asked me to help teach.

Me . . . procrastinate?  Naaahhhh.

Did anyone do better?  I hope so!  Feel free to share your decluttering progress or your decluttering frustrations in the comments, or by linking up a post below.  If you link up a post, be sure to link back to A Slob Comes Clean within that post.  If you need help knowing how to do that, just email me by using my contact form and I’ll be happy to help you.

I spent the weekend decluttering my kitchen. Sadly I only put three items in to go box, and move a few things out of one of the cabinets to go into the china cabinet. I did declutter the counter tops, put things back in their place, and rearranged a few cabients though. Hoping that makes it easier to find and get to the items I need.

Three bags sitting in my garage ready to go to the local thrift shop. Nothing exciting…mostly clothes from my teen and items from my homeschooling declutter a few weeks ago. Still, like you said, better than nothing! Wish it were only the end of August….

The Princess & I dropped off 4 boxes at Goodwill a week or so ago & I’ve started adding to another box (which will hopefully get filled THIS month). I gave 2 grocery bags of outgrown clothing to the Lego King’s friend. I also have a laundry basket of clothing to take to the clothing drop off. Yes, I could take it to Goodwill too, but a local church uses them for their African Mission Donations. It’s been slow this month it seems, but with every donation, decluttered or tossed item, it is a step forward (even if it is only an inch)

I decluttered my garage a few weeks ago and it felt SO good. I came out of with a ton of trash. I’m talking at least 3 big boxes of trash. Also 3 boxes of mens, womens, and kids shoes to donate; probably about 20 pairs total. One big box of toys.

Alana, thank you SOOOO much for letting me know that! I have no idea why it defaults to NOT show the links, and thought I had made sure it would. I’m sorry! It’s fixed now though.

I have a 20 year old broken stereo that is sitting on my parents coffee table. At least the decision to get rid of it has been made. I re-organized the living room, but I didn’t get rid of anything. I just put them in the “storage room” aka what is supposed to be my bedroom. But that’s a horse of a different color.

At my house, I was really hoping to have made more progress. I got rid of two diaper boxes of clothes and a trash bag of baby blankets(dd is 2yo). But my church is taking clothes, toys and food to Kentucky on a mission trip. So I have motivation. Now I need time… and energy. Lol

When I did clothing change out for my girls last month I came up with 5 kitchen trash bags of clothing to get rid of!!!! Kind of embarrassing that after getting rid of that much my girls still have more clothing than what they need! But it feels good to have that much less to go through in the Spring when it is time for clothing change out again!!! Now if only I could get rid of 5 totes of toys………….

We were given a queen sized mattress and box spring and so we bought a bed frame and “installed” this in our bedroom last month. I cleaned out the space that was under the bed. Mostly beads and dust bunnies. I suppose this might be a “detail” as we’ve been sleeping in a full sized bed since we got married and this is a tight squeeze when a little one has a nightmare and wants to climb into our bed.

Also, I cleaned out our “utilities” drawer. I got rid of all the junk so it’s not a junk drawer. I only kept things I know we’ll genuinely use: scotch tape, notepads, scissors, a couple of screwdrivers, a stapler and staples, a ruler, that kind of thing. I sharpened all the pencils so my kids have what they need when they’re doing their homework and I threw away all the ridiculous little pencil stubs that no one wants to use anyway! I didn’t take the time to test each pen but I told the kids NOT to toss a pen that doesn’t write back into the drawer. Throw it away and get one that works! The bad ones will be eliminated slowly but SURELY!

Most of my “decluttering” lately has been just throwing stuff away that should have been thrown away ages ago. It’s a good habit to be building, I’m really great at not accumulating, but somehow the outward flow is still sluggish.

Got to tackle the art supplies. For some reason this is the bane of my existence.

I’ve been reading your blog backwards for 9 days now, and you inspired me to declutter two giant black garbage bags of clothes that my kids and I no longer wear! There’s at least two more bags worth in my laundry room, but there’s no more room in my trunk to haul them to Goodwill. 🙂

I tackled my grandmothers’ scarves last night. I don’t know the proper punctuation to indicate that the scarves were indeed from both of my grandmothers.
I was blessed to get to spend a lot of time with each of my grandmothers. One had more pricey items, but both were classy ladies.
I remember walking into my Mom’s mom’s house around High school, and finally asking her what some round boxes were. Apparently, I didn’t know what a hat box was. She said they’re hat boxes from your Grandmother (which made it clear coming from my other Grandmother).
Yes, they both were called Grandmother, with the distinction of their first name! Haha!
I thought it was sweet that one shared with the other, because generally they had pretty separate lives for being in-laws living in the same town for decades.

When my Mom’s mom went to be with Jesus, I got the hat boxes!! Hooray!!
They generally haven’t been useful for me since I got them.
And since we bought our first home 2 years ago, I really don’t have an ideal spot for BOTH.

So I tackled the boxes (figuratively). Dove in, and there were some clear donations. Maybe more of the stuff I would’ve wanted, had stories been shared. But all I have is the memory of seeing them, knowing where they came from, and trying to guess who’s scarves are who’s based on lifestyle.

I’m excited to keep the detailed handkerchiefs that my Mom’s mom probably detailed. And the fancy silk scarves that just remind me of how much I loved my Grandmothers.

I decluttered 2 of 4 identical water bottles today. And 2 containers of sesame seeds, since I can’t eat them anymore and no one else in the home likes them.

Also helped spouse declutter an accordion file of 10-year-old papers.
