Beautiful Things

Whew! That was a crazy weekend with my son’s birthday party, and then a fun-packed day today. It’s the kind of weekend that makes my slob-vision flare up. Focus on the fun . . . and the clutter in my peripheral vision blurs.

Thankfully, my husband has cleaned the kitchen this weekend.

More than once.

Probably more than three times.

When I saw those bowls stacked above, somehow I was moved to take a picture. Partly because I’m a slob-blogger and slob-bloggers take pictures of their dishes, partly because I just think they’re so pretty, and partly because I wanted to honor him. He has been so supportive in my attempts to change, and although he couldn’t help but be skeptical in the early days, he is now fully on board.

And those gorgeous bowls represent progress to me. My brother and his wife gave them to me last Christmas, and I loved them so much, and was far enough along in this deslobification process, that I chose to let them replace all of our mismatched mixing bowls that were cluttering up the cabinets. Pre-blog, I would have just added them to the ones we had . . . . using the additional set to justify going longer between dishwashing-sessions.

But finally, I was ready to replace mediocre things with beautiful things. And seeing them all sitting there, clean, gave me hope that someday . . . I’ll be ready for more beautiful things.

Cooking Ahead = Meals From Scratch in Minutes (And My Chicken Fried Rice Recipe w/Pics)

September 11, 2010 By Dana White 23 Comments

1.7Kshares 209 0 1.5K  It’s freezer cooking time again. Last month, we focused on breakfasts, and I had a blast in the kitchen with the kids. The blueberry pancakes were gobbled up quickly, so I’d like to make some more of those this month. Other than that, I’m not going to do anything time-intensive. I’m […]

Ugh. Exercise.

September 11, 2010 By Dana White 4 Comments

1share 1 0 0Why oh why did I get on Twitter just now?   I should have been cleaning the kitchen. I should have been making the icing for my son’s birthday cake. I should have been doing anything other than checking Twitter.   Why, you ask, am I being so dramatic?   I did […]

Daily Checklist and Party Prep

September 10, 2010 By Dana White 2 Comments

2shares 2 0 0Friday is my son’s birthday party.  He’ll be 7 next Monday. I throw parties every other year for my kids, and while I do enjoy the stress-free “off” years, I looovvveee the “on” years more. While I don’t really shine in the area of housekeeping, party-throwing is right up my alley. My […]

Seeing Things That Aren’t There

September 9, 2010 By Dana White 3 Comments

1share 0 0 1 For the past two weeks, I’ve dusted on Friday. You’re right. I should call the Guiness people. Anyway, this bizarre thing has been happening. It’s like my Super-Selective-Slob-Vision has been reversed. Every time I walk by the TV, I notice that it doesn’t have dust. How is that possible  . . […]

Attacking Clothing Clutter

September 8, 2010 By Dana White 33 Comments

12.3Kshares 2.0K 0 10.3K It’s time. Time to reclaim the master bedroom. The biggest challenge? Clothing clutter. Last week, it looked like this: OK, let me explain part of my slob-problem here. You look at this picture and see chaos. I look at this picture and see a logical explanation. Where we live, summers are […]

Ten Proofs that Mamas Don’t Get Holidays

September 6, 2010 By Dana White 14 Comments

224shares 210 0 14   One reason why my slob-problem worsened once I became a mom was that for way too long, I held onto the delusion that moms get holidays. Moms don’t even get weekends. Here’s a list of ten things that prove my point. Keep in mind that this is by no means […]

Fakin’ It

September 6, 2010 By Dana White 4 Comments

0shares 0 0 0When I’m at my in-laws house, I’m a cleaning fool. Not that they don’t know I have “issues.” There have been enough less-than-two-weeks-warning visits over the years that my secret isn’t completely safe. But when I’m at their house, I’m Queen Dishwasher. See, for the first few years we were married, I […]

Thirty Years Later . . .

September 5, 2010 By Dana White 18 Comments

200shares 200 0 0I’ve decided to get rid of this: I received this suitcase from my grandparents, when I was no more than 6 years old.  I clearly remember getting it, and it’s one of the few specific memories I have of the inside of their old farmhouse. For the past 10 years (or more) […]
