“Oh, I Already Have One of Those” – Clutter Avoidance Conversations

November 18, 2014 By Dana White 7 Comments

How to Prevent Clutter: "Thanks, but I already have one.". at ASlobComesClean.com

Today’s Clutter Avoidance Conversation takes the “But I Already Have One of Those” approach.

So logical. (Sometimes) so hard to communicate.

(Click here if you can’t see the video.)

Script:

(Me, entering the door, carrying food.)

Me: Hey, we’re here!!

Them: (Coming around the corner) Well, hello!! Do you see it? Did you notice?? I got a new table (Screams with excitement!!)

Me: (Screams with excitement for her)

Them: (Screams a little more)

Me: (Screams a little more)

Me: I love it!! Really!! You must be so excited!! It’s beautiful!

Them: And do you know the very best part?? I moved the old one into my sewing room and replaced that really old table that was Grandma Betty’s that has the wobbly leg.

Me: Great! Good thinking!

Them: And that’s not all!! Guess what?!?! I’m giving Grandma Betty’s table to you!! (Screams with excitement)

Me: (looking not-so-excited) The one with the wobbly leg?

Them: Well yes, but I bet you could fix it up real quick and easy like.

Me: Oh, I don’t need it. I really like my table.

Them: But it was Grandma Betty’s.

Me: I never knew Grandma Betty. Was she actually related to us?

Them: She was a real sweet lady and I’ve always thought I’d give you that table once I got me a new one I liked.

Me: That’s nice of you, but I really do like the one I have.

Them: Then you can just keep it in the garage until you figure out where you want it.

Me: Oh, I can’t do that. You know how hard I’m working to get clutter out of my house! I can’t bring something in just to sit in the garage.

Them: Hmmmph.

Clutter Avoidance Conversations – The “I’ll See What I Can Use” Approach

November 17, 2014 By Dana White 14 Comments

I had too much fun doing sample Clutter Guilt Conversations a few weeks ago. Really, too much. (Waaaayyyy too much.) As the Holiday Season starts here in the U.S. next week with Thanksgiving, I thought it appropriate to share some approaches for avoiding clutter that well-meaning friends and family try to give you at family […]

Volunteers Make Things Happen at TMMC

November 14, 2014 By Dana White 3 Comments

I’ve loved sharing the things I learned on my trip to The Marine Mammal Center for Dawn’s Day in the Wildlife as a spokesperson for Dawn. I’m fascinated by all the work and detail that goes into rehabilitating the animals to re-enter the wild. But it’s the people who inspire me. They’re normal people who’ve […]

Systems Help. Really, They Do.

November 13, 2014 By Dana White 10 Comments

I walked out to the Donate Box yesterday morning and found this: It’s a carseat. A carseat that’s been embarrassing us. We haven’t had a kid who could fit in that carseat for a very long time. Despite that obvious-to-anyone-who-knows-us fact, it had been hooked up in the back of my husband’s car until yesterday. […]

The Very BEST Kind of Decluttering

November 11, 2014 By Dana White 22 Comments

After yesterday’s Beyond Depressing Decluttering Post, I’m happy to share this one. Last night, as we watched our favorite family show (Shark Tank), my 8yo got the decluttering itch. She started out looking through our video stash “just to see what we had.” Soon, she was sorting and stacking and making a Donate Pile of […]

The Very Worst Kind of Decluttering

November 10, 2014 By Dana White 35 Comments

Ouch. We finally did it. My husband has been mentioning this for a while, but I’d successfully pretended I didn’t hear him. At some point in the past ten years, we had moths. His suits were ruined. Every single one of them. He wears a dress shirt and tie every day to work, but never […]
