I made another video! If you don’t see it below, go here to watch.
The basic story of this decluttering project is that I started it on February 18th, broke through the major overwhelm, and pulled out the easiest of the easy stuff to stick into an immediately overflowing donatable Donate Box. I also straightened a little.
Then life happened.
I got back to the decluttering project exactly one month later, on March 18th.
But because I’d used my handy-dandy strategy for decluttering without making a bigger mess, that was fine. And I enjoyed a not-perfect-but-better linen closet for that month.
Yay for that. Yay for proving to myself once again that going ahead and starting, going ahead and doing something, going ahead and JUST decluttering, even when I can’t guarantee that I’ll actually be able to do this perfectly, is good.
It’s all about the starting.
And the moral of that story isn’t even that I finally got back to working on the linen closet after a month. It’s that my life was easier for that month, even though the “project” wasn’t “finished.”

I love this video! I love that you give us permission to make it “better”, even if we are the only ones who would consider it better. You are correct, the other methods end up in a bigger mess. I loathe all of the advice to remove everything from you closet! Like that’s a good idea when the bar and floor of the living room has stuff everywhere! You are my tribe.

Yay! I love my tribe!

Oh, and I didn’t think your hair looked bad from the back either time. I think your color was a little more uniform the 2nd time, but cute as the dickens either way!

THANK YOU! I’ve been itching to deal with my linen closet for a long time, but I’ve been following your “Visible Spaces” rule. So the linen closet isn’t really on my radar other than the fact that it’s what I’m hankering to work on. This scratched that itch a bit. Now I need to figure out how to scratch the itch for the office.

I feel like I’ve found my people!! I’m so happy right now to have found your blog. Most clean up and organizing info is for people who are already neat freaks, not someone who goes frozen, numb and then walks back out at the site of their craft room. Can’t wait to dive in to more information. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Welcome! You’ve definitely found your people!

I’m about to BUILD a linen closet. Glad I watched this first so I can keep an eye out for pitfalls.
What I loved about this particular video is all the deep breaths you had to take to get through the ‘overwhelming-ness’ of it all. Yeahhhh. I felt it, too.

Watching you RIGHT NOW on World News Now! This was the most recent place I could find to post a comment. Great job, Dana!

Oh yay!!!! I had no idea it was airing tonight! They emailed to let me know it was on, and I was already in bed!
So happy someone saw it!!

I just love that you “re-declutter!” I want to thank you for your inspiration! After seeing how your mindset helped me with my house, I’ve been applying a lot of your principles to my spiritual growth. I know it sounds crazy, but I feel like we are the same brand of crazy. So, I think you’ll understand.
My blog post today was very much influenced by your “re-decluttering.”

Thank you for sharing! You asked what kinds of things you should take videos of – I love watching you declutter! I could seriously watch hours of decluttering videos – maybe I would even let them run while I declutter!

You do not know how much this means to me. I have MS – fatigue and cognitive issues are a constant but even before I was diagnosed with it ( 38th birthday present- whoopee!) I would get overwhelmed and had trouble keeping “organized” but I could get things done quickly. Now, what I could get done in a day or few hours might take me a week ( or even longer) and though it is very frustrating to me- I feel I am , at least, trying. Your video helps me to see that it is ok and reminds me to not pull everything out which just made me more overwhelmed since the stuff would be sitting there for days…..I just ordered your book and cannot wait to read it- will have to read a little bit at a time because MS makes me so tired and my eyes get blurry when I try to ready very much. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story ! I am sorry for this rambling message but just wanted to tell you how glad I am to find someone who really gets it !

“Nothing fell” counts as a win in MY house, too! Thanks for being an Everywoman we can encourage, roll our eyes because we relate so well, and laugh with!

I have a middle bedroom that needed decluttering. My girlfriend came over today and got me started and it’s looking so good. I already bought a futon for guests this weekend. My problem is buying and bringing more stuff in.
