Big news in our house:
We got a new remote!!!
Our DVR died recently. This seems to happen every five years or so, and thankfully the company sends us a new one without a lot of hassle.
But as I learned last time, new DVRs don’t come with new remotes.
Sooooo, the remote we had was about ten years old.
The battery cover was long gone. The faces of the buttons were gone.
This time, while on the phone with the satellite rep, I thought to inquire about a new remote control. I decided it was worth $20 every ten years to have one that works without standing up and repeatedly mashing buttons and muttering unkind things about technology under my breath.
And after a tell-me-every-teeny-tiny-step call with customer service, this one even controls the TV and the Blu-Ray and everything.
We’re big time now, y’all.
And yet the old one sat by the new one for a week. I hated that thing, but didn’t pitch it until I was “cleaning up.”
Whatever. It’s gone now.

That could have almost happened to me this week! We got a new fridge this week and instead of hauling away the old one I had the delivery guys put it in our garage. It so could have become clutter, but about 30 hours later I posted it for sale on Cragislist and it sold 3 hours later! Such aa relief.
sooo… a year or two ago, we had to replace our remote twice in one week because my son (then 1) had become fascinated with throwing things in the aquarium. and yet, i saved both waterlogged remotes “just in case” after i had gotten them to mostly work after storing them in rice. we now have a new cable box, that the old remotes won’t even mostly work with because it’s a totally different system. And yet they’re still floating around my house somewhere because i haven’t yet decluttered whatever area it is that i have them stored in.
The good news is you will know they are clutter when you find them!
just as i read your reply, i turned to my right, and saw both old remotes, cluttering up a box that’s supposed to have usb cables and miscellaneous chargers. they are now gone. thanks!
That’s great!
I have done the same thing with a computer router. I opened the armoires and think … WHY??? It was broken, why didn’t I throw it away? As for remotes… Our pit mix puppy liked to chew on everything – and by everything, I mean even woodwork around doorways. Shoes, a pair of jeans, a small tractor tire (recommended by the vet for him to chew on – yeah, that worked). And eventually, my son’s satellite remote. I had to order another one.
That was almost seven years ago – and I still haven’t figured out how to make it work. The television is shot now anyway, but it could work with the one in the living room. It would be handy since we have to practically push the buttons through the case to get it to work … but I hate calling tech support for those “tell-me-every-teeny-tiny-step” calls. But someday when I do break down and do it, I will gladly chuck the old one in the trash. If it doesn’t wind up in the armoire. Just in case…
LOL You make me laugh. One of my pet peeves is trash that never makes it to the trash can. Especially trash on the kitchen counter with the trashcan right below it….
We do still have a plethora of remotes. We also recently cancelled our cable which meant we had no tv, because we didn’t have an antenna & i didn’t know how to stream. The tv was used twice a week to play a movie until my dad gave us an antenna on superbowl Sunday. THAT is when we learned that the ONE BUTTON that could switch the tv reception to antenna didn’t work. My husband worked on it with each remote for HOURS until i got home. I pointed my phone at the tv, pressed a few buttons, & boom, it worked. I looked at my wonderful husband & said “There’s an app for that.” All of the remotes? Still on the couch.
