This one isn’t as much of a delusion, as a hope.
And a dread.
I’ve been in shape before. I know it can be done, and I know that I can do it. The times when I’ve been in shape, I had little ones at home with me. Really, they aren’t an excuse.
But over the last year or so, I haven’t been in shape. I’ve gone through phases of exercising, but I haven’t been consistent.
Shocker, I know.
Even though I KNEW that I didn’t have a legit excuse for being out-of-shape, for about the last six months I have gladly latched onto the all-too-easy dream that once the kids were all in school, it would be easy to exercise.
It would finally be convenient to stop by the gym on the way home from dropping off the kids in the morning.
Even though this means I have to join the gym.
I’ve joined gyms before . . . but have stepped foot in one fewer than five times in my life.
I soooo do not want this one to be just a ridiculous delusion. I have to have a plan. A plan takes this dream one step closer to becoming a reality.
- I have a friend who says she wants to meet at the gym at this time. Before the birth of her last child, she worked out this way. I’m hoping she’ll be a good influence.
- Hubby has already checked. Adding me to his membership will only cost 10$. We looked into this a few years ago and it was going to be around 30 extra for me. (I’m more than a little irritated that the Costs-Too-Much excuse was so handily eliminated.)
- I’ve done the Schedule Math. If I get to the gym at 7:45, and exercise for merely 30 minutes (which is 30 minutes more than I’m doing right now), I’ll leave at 8:15 and be home by . . . . 8:16. It’s hard to say that getting home at 8:16 is taking too much of my day.
There’s my plan.
We’ll see.

In case you’re considering upping your workout routine this year, Walmart currently has a great deal on workout weights. The Cap Barbell Strength Neoprene Dumbells are as low as 6.54 with 97 cent shipping!
But . . . if you go through Shop at Home, you can get that same great deal plus 13% cashback through 8/22/11! (Normally, it’s 3%.) The Shop at Home link is my affiliate link.
I hope it works out for you!I’m impressed by your planning. I have on more than one occasion owned more gym memberships than bodies. I have yet to make it through an entire year.
I’m planning my route to work so that I have to hike up a steep hill every day to get there. That plus 20 mins on the treadmill at night is the sum total of my exercise plan for this fall. I figure I will probably manage at least the hill part.
Ha, I read this and had to laugh… because… there is a workout video in my DVD player right now… instead of working out and playing it… I am looking at blogs. Grrr. off to do my workout.
Hey! I think it would be great for you to go to the gym. I just recently started a blog about my new ventures of getting healthier, and other things and would love for you to check it out! Hope it goes well for you and keep us updated! 🙂
Oh Nony, its the same here..i had been thinking about this for long so it was nice to see you talk about it and a good plan. i ad been out of shape since i had kids and blamed it on hormones ..but i knew that was not true. Thank you for the inspiration. i too will try along with you.
I understand. It’s so easy to take the somewhat-true-excuse of child-bearing-related-body-changes too far!
Awesome that you are even thinking of exercising! (that burns a few calories, right?)
I am addicted to my exercise endorphins! They are sooo helpful in keeping me even keeled!
Good luck! 😉
Thanks for the encouragement, Kim! I could use some endorphins!
Would love to hear how its going – I’ve been planning on doing a prenatal yoga dvd but I never have time (I am online you know). You should know, I bought this while pregnant with my one year old and since have had another baby, all the while the dvd is still unopened!
Wanted to share my experience. I’m 60 so I’ve had gym memberships, walked with friends but I’ve never found anything that I looked forward to doing until recently. I use DVDs by Leslie Sansone Walk at Home. A huge variety available to suit all levels of fitness. I have 3 different ones to mix it up & love it. All you need is joggers, plus the DVDs. No wasted gym memberships. For me it’s a plus not having to get in the car & go somewhere to exercise so you save on travel time as well.
I walk for 5 days then take 1 off. The most important thing is I enjoy it so find something you enjoy.
Hey, I just wanted to put in a thought…I, like you and probably others, have been “in shape” (read: not model-thin, just healthy-ish) several times in my life. Each time I thought I would keep it up “forever”, and every time something got in the way (usually, my laziness).
Instead of being mad at myself, and beating myself up I have tried to take the attitude that having spent hours in the gym in the past is part of why I am not 400 lbs as I sit here (I’m about half that, which is way too much). Every minute I spent exercising was of benefit to me. Instead of being upset with myself, I’m philosophical (while NOT rationalizing). I KNOW I need to get healthy, not just lose weight. Part of that health is emotional and intellectual. I don’t want to exercise to meet some unrealistic goal placed in my mind by society. I want to do it because it’s best for me, and it’s time well spent…
Good luck everyone with your healthy endeavors, and Happy New Year!
