Storage Solutions that Don’t Work

It’s possible . . .

. . . that someone is thinking, “Wow, she’s right.  That shelf is a mess.  What a bad storage solution.”

The mess on the shelf isn’t actually what I’m talking about.

This ain’t no organizational blog, Lady.

Here’s the deal.  Today is Day Three of Snow Week.  I wanted to create a look-what-we-did-while-drinking-faux-hot-chocolate-on-our-day-at-home-isn’t-our-mother-the-most-creative kind of moment.  I ran across a book that claimed it had project ideas using items you already have.

And if it’s claiming that normal people have these objects, you know I have them.

I flipped through and found an idea to make banks out of coffee cans.  And we’ve got plenty of those.  Not actually cans, but even cooler, more modern, handled plastic coffee containers.

I’ve started throwing them away.  We have so many that I just can’t find uses for them all.

Hubby won’t throw them away.  Because they’re cool.  So we end up with two or three in the pantry at any given time.

When I decided to make this craft, I remembered that some had been shoved on the top shelf, you know . . . just to get them out of the way.  Who knows how long they’d been up there?

I grabbed one, and it was heavy.  I opened it.  It was full of crayons.

Good crayons.

Crayons like we can never find when we need them, but we know that we must surely own.

The other had paint in it.

Paint that would have been perfect to use when my daughter and I painted get well pictures for Hubby on Monday.
Paint that I know hasn’t been used in over a year.
Obviously, unlabeled opaque containers don’t work as a storage solution around here.

Some Weeks You Make Progress . . . Some Weeks Not

Last week I made quite a bit of progress.

I was on a roll.  Before I knew it, I’d be at a point with nothing left to declutter and nothing left to write.

And then this week happened.

Hubby was sick on Monday.

Tuesday was a legit Snow Day.

Today, Wednesday, is a why-oh-why-did-they-call-off-school-when-the-roads-are-fine-and-now-we-have-to-go-to-school-on-Memorial-Day kind of day.

And as far as making progress goes . . . I’m not.  I have managed to do laundry on Monday and clean bathrooms on Tuesday and run the dishwasher every night, but the house is feeling the effects of all this loosi-goosiness.

And, at one moment, this thought flitted through my brain: “Oh well.  This week is a bust.”

It was only a flit, before I caught myself.  I actually love these days.  My 4yo is giddy having the whole family home for days on end.  My concept of the days-of-the-week has flown completely out the window.  The boys’ faces when they realized that they didn’t have to go to school AGAIN TODAY . . . was priceless.

Maybe it’s not perfect.  Maybe I let the boys play video games most of yesterday.  Maybe I ran out of hot chocolate mix and microwave popcorn.  Maybe the house has suffered from a clutter explosion with the lack of routine.

But it’s okay.  I’ll get back to routined weeks.  I’ll buy more hot-chocolate packets.  I’ll change out of my pajamas before suppertime.

But for now, I’m enjoying the moment.  The movies, the old-fashioned stove popped popcorn, the extra fudgy hot chocolate made from pudding mix.

The time.

I make progress in the weeks when I can, so I can enjoy the weeks when I can’t.
