If I Don’t Know What to Do With It . . .

Decluttering with Kids If I Don't Know What to Do With It at ASlobComesClean.com
Look at this cute, odd velvet bow-type-thingy.

My daughter and I worked in her room on Monday while the kids were out of school for President’s Day.

When I ran across the bow, I knew I recognized it. I just couldn’t quite place it. She knew. Grammy gave her a jean jacket for Christmas that included lots of interesting funkiness. I think it was based on the new Annie movie. My 8yo liked the button-related funkiness, but the oddly-shaped bow?

Notsomuch.

She doesn’t have a problem expressing her likes and dislikes.

Anyway, I asked her if we should keep it.

Surely. SURELY we could do something with it. SOMEthing.

She said, “If I don’t know what to do with it, I don’t want to keep it.”

I said “OK.”

And thought, “She’s right. It hurts my soul a little, but she’s right.”

Yay for children maybe (possibly, hopefully) not suffering from Decluttering Paralysis like their mamas do/did.

Thank you for that wisdom, little Nony 🙂 I usually give myself a time limit. If I don’t know what to do with something I tell myself that I have two days to come up with something or its gone. In the meantime, it hangs out in the donate spot, so I don’t have to remember later to go back to it.

    Good job, 8yo girl. 🙂

Thanks for sharing that, Nony. A good reminder to the rest of us too. 🙂 And, it’s great that you are addressing your own issues and passing that skill on to your kiddos! 🙂

And there are people who think we can’t learn from our children. 🙂

I am getting better about that sort of thing too. I had some little square tea tins about the size of a small box of teabags and I wanted to keep because they were totally adorable. But after a year of either forgetting I had them, or not being able to figure out what to put in them, I gave them away. They were just taking up space on my bookshelves – and I’m hating ‘dustables’ more and more all the time.

I like the name “Little Nony” that Jessica said! Oh that I would have so much wisdom!!
And a little child shall lead them!

“When in doubt, throw it out” has been the mantra that has helped me be more ruthless (throw it out being a catch-all for donating/tossing).
