Making Decluttering Progress Slowly (But That’s Okay) – a reader story

I’ve been given permission to share this reader’s story with you. I love her openness, and her willingness to share her personal experience making progress while facing mental health challenges. This isn’t intended to give mental health advice, but I hope it serves the purpose of giving you hope that it is possible to make real progress.

Dear Dana,

I would like to thank you for changing my life.

I listened to one of your books [Decluttering at the Speed of Life] and within three months I managed to declutter most of the things I don’t need, and my flat is always ready for visitors. I still have more decluttering to do but I’ve decided to have a small break as my mental health is low at the moment.

I have bipolar effective disorder and I rarely have a normal mood. I’m either hypomanic and chaotic or very depressed and cannot function. I’m really proud that despite the low mood episode I’m going through I have managed to keep my little place in order.

Your book taught me that I’m not a lost cause and by doing little and often I’ve managed to stick to a routine. This means that I have minimal work to do to keep my place clean and tidy. I clear up after myself and put things away as soon as I use them.

I regularly listen to your books as they keep me grounded and inspire me to keep up my good habits.

I cannot thank you enough for your help and the hope you have given me.

What a beautiful story to read!!! I am also truly inspired by this. I have been doing little things, but often– and Dana was the first person I ever saw/read who celebrated this. It was groundbreaking for me. It has also changed my life in beautiful countless ways 🙂

She is brave and inspiring. A perfect example of what daily habits, no mess decluttering, and your other excellent methods can do.

Thank you for sharing this. It tells me there is hope for me. I lost my organization when I was caregiving for my parents. I accumulated so much because I didn’t have time/energy to take care of it properly that it became a clutter. I have Dana’s books but it is the discipline to sit and read when there is so much to do that I need to work on. Thank you Dana for your posts, too.

Another thank you for sharing Dana. I’m sure most of us don’t have to look far to find a loved one or ourselves with a mental health issue. I’ve read all of your books and am listening to your latest spiritual one on Audible. Thank you Dana for being real and sharing your story because it has benefited so many of us. I’m in the process of moving and it has been 6 years since I moved. I purged a ton then and now am purging again. I’m truly only trying to keep items that bring me joy. I’m 68 and it takes me longer to accomplish the tasks I put before myself, but I keep putting one foot in front of another and am happy when I look back.

    Love you Dana K White!!!!
