Maybe I’m not Martha, but these things are awesome! I didn’t make all of the things on my freezer cooking plan, but I did spend my Happening-Saturday-Night making these breakfast pockets, and they’re the best ones I’ve made so far. I don’t know if it made the difference, but I used bread flour this time, and they taste fabulous!
When I was a newlywed, I loved to watch Food Network, HGTV, etc., gathering up ideas for the days when I would stay home with kids and have time to do all of that. Hahahahahahaha! I had a notebook where I wrote down ideas, and I printed out tons of recipes that I wanted to make.
Then, of course, reality happened and I rarely have the time or energy or money to try those fabulous, work-intensive, gourmet recipes. And the more ingredients a recipe calls for, the more my kids think I’m torturing them.
But these breakfast pockets, although time consuming, make me feel like Martha. While fairly simple, they’re completely made from scratch, and are so much more exciting than a bowl of grape-nuts. They remind me that I LIKE making things that are special and a little challenging. And best of all, the fact that they go in the freezer and are enjoyed for an entire month makes it justifiable to spend a few hours cooking and cleaning.
I’m currently working, little by little, on the ultra-scary pile of odds and ends in the master bedroom. Last night as I sorted, I got to a stack of loose recipes, waiting (for years) to be organized neatly into a pretty little notebook. As I looked through the recipes, I realized that I had never even made the majority of them. I could tell from looking at the dates that I printed many of them over 10 years ago, while still in the dreamy, newlywed, my-house-will-always-be-perfect-and-dinner-will-be-a-wonderful-creative-outlet-every-single-night-of-the-week stage.

I got this recipe from you and my husband loves it! I don't have any kids, but, thanks to him, those breakfast pockets don't last more than a week (and I make a double batch!). He did make a wonderful discovery – they are even more delicious if you put honey on top of them. I didn't ask him what he was doing putting honey on top of random foods, but it worked really well…:) Thanks for the great recipe!

Honey?!?! I never would have thought of that, but I bet it's good. Glad you are enjoying them!

I've been saving recipe newspaper clippings for years, and now have two large shoeboxes full. I rarely look at them; they are stuffed under my bed. I've thought about tossing them out, but so far haven't worked up the nerve. Congratulations on getting rid of your pile! Maybe I'll do the same.

I have many recipes from those first dreamy months (years?) of marriage. I'm sloooooowly sorting out the ones that I know now my hubs wouldn't care for. It's less painful that way.

Thanks for the tip! I am currently engaged (not living together — not even in the same country!) and my daydreams are filled with slow cooker dinners and chopping and freezing all my veggies, and fancy dinners that will impress my inlaws, and etc. And yet I hear about the “recipes I thought I’d make but never did” thing ALL the time. Feels soul-crushing to think that might be me! How simple, how obvious, to think, filter it by the things DH-to-be (or others in the family) will actually like! D’uh! (I blame slob-brain here — you know, the thing that stops me from seeing the clutter…)

Occasionally I'll go through a stack of recipes that I've torn from magazines and think to myself, "What was I thinking? This doesn't even sound good, and I'm not using this many ingredients!" It feels good to pitch the never-to-be-made recipes. Kathy

Just wanted to say that I love your blog! I keep finding different posts on here that just make me feel like I am not alone and I am thankful for that! Time to get up and clean off the kitchen counter (again!) lol. Can't wait to try your recipe too.
Thanks for your posts!

What’s the white thing in the sink? It looks like a target for a gun range lol (obviously not what it is 😉

That’s a pastry thingy from Tupperware! You put it on the counter to roll out pastry, and it has various pie sizes and other measurements printed on it. My mom always used hers so I got one too!

I use a three-ring binder and plastic sheet protectors to slide my recipes in, random or otherwise. If you buy a cutesie binder (like red-checked, for example) it can display nicely in your kitchen. I have an antique wooden box turned on it’s side on top of my refrigerator. I slide everyone’s binder cook books in there. (yes, everyone’s….several of my kids have special recipes from Gramma, so they each have their own book.)

I don’t have kids or family living with me anymore, I’m retired & I live alone. But this idea is just what I need. I am on a new medication that has to be taken first thing, with food. I struggle everyday, half asleep trying to figure out what to eat. I’m going to make these & solve my problem. Thanks for the great idea.
