When you feel inspired to start getting your home under control or tackle a big decluttering project, it’s tempting to think that the first step needs to be rallying the other people in your home to help you get started. That’s not the first step. And thinking it’s the first step can cause a lot of problems and make progress much harder to achieve.

Hi Dana, I was wondering if this summer you might want to make a video for kids or moms, just about kids bedrooms. Since I’ve been decluttering, my daughter (who is 8) asks me for help decluttering & organizing her room. She hears me listening to your podcast and she watched Cass’s Hot Mess House with me and loved it. Then she took her little camera to her barbie dream house and made her own episode, helping the barbies clean one room at a time 🙂 Anyway, it’s tricky with toys, stuffed animals, crafts, clothes storage (hand me downs she hasn’t grown into yet), and all these special things she’s made or been given (water globes, jewelry boxes, painted ceramics, trophies) that she wants to display, and a bed mounded in blankets, cute pillows and stuffties. We’ve pared down quite a bit, but she still struggles to keep it clean of course. And new stuff keeps coming in constantly it seems. Anyway, just an idea since you said you’ll be youtubing all summer. I know she’d love it. She asked to find a video about how to clean kids rooms but none of them teach how, they’re all just sped up videos where you watch someone clean. I’ll have to get your book on teaching kids to clean. Thanks!

Hi Dana, bought both of your books after subscribing to your YouTube channel- my favorite ever to get my life back from clutter due to my ADHD, PTSD, Clinical Depression Depression for over 20 years. My Ex kidnapped my kids, left me in a foreclosed home, and I lost my job as a pharmacist. After my Divorce and being an estranged mom for 20 years, you gave me the courage to declutter & organize my life. Honestly at times I feel like giving up, then I think about you, rewatch your videos, & read my favorite parts of your books, and go back on track to organize my home, no matter how overwhelmed I feel. THANK YOU SOOO VERY MUCH FOR BEING AN ANGEL & CHAMPION for all of us who are living with a disability of not being normal in our thought processes due to trauma, and abnormal mental processes!

I totally saw this at work just today. While struggling to lengthen the straps on her overalls this morning, she mentioned that they were getting too small for her and she needed to do a load of laundry so that she has clean jeans that fit her well. I hadn’t done laundry last week so it has two weeks now since she’s had all of her clothes cleaned. It’s been a long-standing, not-well-enforced rule, that everyone brings their clothes from their bedrooms to the laundry room on Sunday night. I didn’t remind anyone to do this last night but I noticed this morning that my daughter had taken hers to be washed. I feel like she missed me doing laundry last week and took the initiative to go ahead and get the ball rolling.
