The Best Way to be Ready to Deal with the Unexpected is to Declutter

evacuation tsunami ready for unexpected declutter at aslobcomesclean.com

For many of us who struggle with clutter, “What if?” scenarios run through our heads and make decluttering difficult. “What if something awful happens and I wish I’d kept this?”
But the truth I see play out again and again is the one experienced by “Mary” in this message she sent me on Instagram. The best way to be ready to deal with the unexpected is to declutter.
Here’s her story:

Hi Dana and team! My mom encouraged me to reach out to share a pretty significant success story. I have only been following Dana’s methods for about a month, ever since someone recommended your first book.

We live on the Southern California coast, very lucky to be very near the beach. We were in the tsunami advisory area last night. After I put my toddler to bed, I was able to complete my entire evacuation packing checklist in under 90 minutes. It was because of the progress I made over the last few weeks that I knew exactly where all our important things were. This is a text I sent to my mom:

“I found myself grateful for the decluttering I have been doing. I was able to immediately find our love letters, all our important files and passports, all my jewelry and stuff. Also all of our laundry was clean and put away so it was easy to grab things for about a week.”

Thank you!!!!

I love hearing this! Decluttering makes the unexpected so much less stressful!

I was given a 30 minute to evacuate for a wild fire at zero degrees and 100mph winds and electric for half the time then dark the last 15. As I walked around and did a fast video for insurance, I thought my house looked like I had been ransacked & robbed. I started my decluttering journey. Now live in earthquake zone so I have a too go bag.

Oh my gosh, what an inspiration in hard times! And Gale, your situation also makes me realize, I can do so much better at getting things under control. I don’t live in an area with bad weather forecasts (Michigan is pretty tame) but nothing is for certain in this life. Thanks for the stories.
