This post is brought to you by Swiffer. It’s about Swiffer and about some deep thoughts I’ve had lately regarding storage.
But, other than the fact that a Swiffer duster is great for getting in all sorts of random places (could be storage places) and actually trapping the dust, storage and Swiffer don’t seem to go together.
Bear with me as I explain the reason I’m writing about these two things in one post. I saw, in August, the very best example of storage I had ever seen. And that was thanks to Swiffer.
Y’all know I’m a Swiffer Ambassador, right? This year for our Swiffer Immersion trip, we went to Los Angeles. We spent the morning learning about all the new Swiffer innovations that will release in the spring of next year. Some of them are very exciting. In a cleaning-products-that-solve-problems-I-face-everyday-make-me-excited kind of way.
I can’t share what new stuff is coming in the spring, because I had to sign things saying I wouldn’t (this is VERY serious business, y’all), but I can tell you that if you have a Swiffer XL, you can now get wet sheets for it! No more struggling to make do with two regular-sized wet sheets.
Still wondering where the thoughts on storage come into this story?
As always, Swiffer showed us a fun time. Honestly, that’s one of the reasons I love working with them so much.
We visited Adopt and Shop in Culver City and met some awesome dogs and served dinner at LA Family Housing to some of the friendliest people ever!
We recorded a Swiffer song at Capitol Music, and took a Warner Bros Studio Tour.
The WB tour was where I had a Storage-Related Moment of Clarity.
We walked through one small section of the prop storage building. So many interesting things made my heart (the part of my heart that loves interesting things) feel all warm and fuzzified.
Memories of the days when I taught theatre came flooding back. In those fun days, I had a legitimate excuse for collecting and keeping any interesting thing that crossed my path.
I loved looking at fifty different styles of telephones and globes and such.
But then I started taking notice of the way this incredibly organized storage facility was set up. Shelves were everywhere. Paths were narrow. Spaces were full.
But every single thing was visible and get-to-able.
And it made me think about storage in general. Real-life storage as opposed to we-make-movies storage.
In frantic decluttering sessions early on in my deslobification process, I sometimes wondered if there was any legitimate reason to store something I didn’t use all the time.
Now, I understand that every decluttering decision comes down to the Container Concept. I can keep whatever fits easily in my home at a level I can keep under control easily, with priority given to things we use now.
Storage is fine, as long as it meets the guidelines of the Container Concept.
So how do you properly store things?
Piles aren’t storage.
Sorry. They’re my default, too.
If something is worthy of taking up storage space, I must be able to see it and get to it easily. Or see the box it’s in (and know it’s in the box it’s in) and get to that box easily.
This means having a room piled with boxes that would require a whole day (or whole week) spent digging around to find something isn’t okay. That’s not storing. That’s shoving.
So storage space, when applying the facts-are-facts Container Concept, needs to include not only room for the actual items to go, but room around those items to allow me to get to them easily.
Hmmmm. Lots to consider.
Maybe look at it like this: My goal is to be able to dust the item (or at least the top of the box the item is in) with my Swiffer duster.
Because we can, let’s do another Swiffer giveaway! Giveaway is now over.
Just leave a comment on this post (click on the title of the post to get here if you’re reading via email), and tell me what you clean (or think you would clean) with Swiffer. One comment will be chosen (I’ll use random.org to choose a number), and that person will have 48 hours from the time I send them an email to respond with their mailing address. Continental U.S. only. (Sorry!) The giveaway entries will close on November 13th, 2017 at 9 p.m. Central time.
Included: Swiffer Sweeper Small Box Starter Kit, Wet refills, Dry refills, Swiffer Duster, Duster refills
Approximately $50 value.
And y’all, I WON that!!! Like, it’s mine now.

I love using the Swiffer to clean my ceiling fan blades.

I would use Swiffer to clean the babies room. It would be so nice to know I’m not using harsh chemicals. Or using something loud, like the vacuum, because, ya know, sleeping baby. Who wants to wake a sleeping baby???
But it would let me clean everything in the house, even if I was holding my daughter (baby snuggles are the best), because I would be able to do it one-handed. Bonus, it wouldn’t scare my furbaby either. Win-win.
Becky says
I use swiffer to wipe down the walls and remove the random fuzz and cat fur and who knows what (OK, it happens rarely, but it always looks so nice when I do do it)
Lyn says
We use Swiffers for dusting (which we need to do more of) and for our floors. We have laminate and they are gentle enough on them to not damage them but effective in cleaning up the messes of our family. I need to get a dry sweeper though, because our baby is about to start crawling and DEAR GOD THE ANIMAL HAIR SHE’LL FIND!
Linda Hickman says
I have heard great things about the Swiffer system. I would really enjoy using this to clean! We live in the country, and we have LOADS of dust and dirt flying about that really need to be corralled, or should I say SWIFFERED 😀
Tera B says
I would clean my kitchen and dining room floors, which need very much to be cleaned, and now you’ve given me an excuse to wait another couple of weeks at least.

Ceiling fan blades! They are not my favorite to clean, so I just want to get the job done fast. 🙂

I use ’em on my wood flooring, the walls, and for dusting.
TwinMomInTexas says
Baseboards. We moved into this house 15 years ago. I can probably count on one hand the number of times the baseboards have been dusted. But the only time I notice is AFTER guests are in the house… And OMG, WHAT IS THAT GREY FUZZ on the baseboards? Not mold… just dust bunnies. Something I might clean if I just didn’t have to crawl around on the floor to do it.
And did I mention we have DARK mahogany furniture? It’s gorgeous, when it’s not covered in dust. And it’s totally a dust magnet. Every.little.spec.of.dust.in.the.house. It’s a losing battle…
Kelly Nielsen says
I would use it to dust off the TV and bookshelves. Cat hair gets EVERYWHERE, ya know?! 🙂
BethanyH says
I love my Swiffer duster! If I won, I’d give one to my mom, I was helping her clean before a party the other day, and she doesn’t have a Swiffer! Let’s just say i skipped dusting, I’d already swept and didn’t need all that dust on the floor!
Peggy Consolver says
So all the “storage” places being built in our area, probably for us Baby Boomers who may be downsizing, should really be called “You Shove It” places. I can see the marquis now: “You shove it, here!”
Julie H says
The Swiffer products are fantastic for my laminate floors and the constant dog hair. And I’m soooooo jealous of that blinged up Swiffer!! 😍

Logan says
I am new to deslobification! I just got your book and now am following your blog. I needed this years ago!! With 2 children (one almost 3 and one 7 month) I would use the swiffer to clean up the kitchen floor after dinner so I don’t have to lug out my huge noisy vaccuum. It would help not to scare the baby. I could use it to get ready for the crawling stage. AHHHHH! My floors are definitely not ready for a crawling baby. Hopefully I can keep up the momentum! A swifter would help out immensely.
Tiana McKinney says
I use the swifter sweeper with the dry cloths to dust my walls since I have tall ceilings. Works great!

I use my Swiffer to clean my RV floors. It can be broken down and takes very little space, but does a GREAT job! Anyone who has ever owned an RV knows that storage space is at a huge premium! Swiffer is pervect.
Jessica says
Oh I would clean the hard wood floor in my daughters room, dust ceiling fans and places that are a pain to reach, mini blinds. My dusting would be so much easier.
Lee Ann Samons says
I need all the cleaning help I can get!!!

My hardwood floors could definitely use swiffering! And ceiling fans. And dusting. Seems like those things don’t get done nearly as often as they should.
Kimberly says

I would use Swiffer to clean all of the newly-decluttered areas in my home! I have been listening to Dana’s book on AUDIBLE over & over since spring! It’s the best motivator EVER for clutter. I can’t recommend it enough! My basement is almost empty & now clean thanks to Dana, for the first time in 23 years! Two thousand pounds of clutter gone! Thank you Dana! I tell everyone how you have helped me.
Amy says
Between my long hair and my cat’s long hair, I sweep the floor with Swiffer EVERY DAMN DAY
Frances-Agape says
Oh, Lordy, what would I NOT clean !?!?!?!
For the last 7 years, we have concentrated on ill, elderly parents – 90 yo Father, 89 yo Mother-in-Law with Alzheimers and 90 yo Father-in-Law with multiple myleoma. They are now at rest, but with (1) letting lots of housework slide while care-taking and (2) dealing with the cleaning and disposal of an 800 sq ft apartment and a 2200 sq ft house, WE NEED HEAVY DUTY TOOLS !
BeGood says
We just moved from an all-carpeted apartment to a house with lost of (beautiful) wood floors. I would LOVE a stiffer to help maintain cleanliness around here!
Lori says
I love Swiffers for my hardwood floors, and my boys think it’s great fun to do it too!
Tiffany says
This post got me thinking I actually need to use a Swiffer on the floor of my storage area in the basement!
Penelope says
I clean my window blinds with Swiffer sheets. They are also great for getting up glitter and embossing powder when I’m card-making. I’ve been wanting one of those fluffy duster things in the hopes that I could dust my fan blades without clumps of dust falling everywhere…
Leslie Gawne says
I have a weird problem (I’m sure you can relate to weird problems!). I in fact actually LOVE to organize. I’m the go-to person for loading up a dishwasher, I love playing tetris with things, moving and shifting them until everything clicks into Maximum Organized Position (where it all looks nice and neat and appeals to my sense of order and balance and use of space).
What I do not love is cleaning. At this very moment my kitchen counters are all at 99% M.O.P….and my kitchen floor is filthy. Which is sad and tragic because it’s a tiny galley kitchen with about 20 square feet of floor space, so how hard can it be to mop? But I also suffer from Time Awareness Issues, and I’m balking at All The Time it will take to clean. If I won the Swiffer contest I would be forced to confront this because I would feel too guilty not to. (I clearly need to re-read your book, Nony!)

Maggie says
My kitchen floor!
Maris Buller says
My wood floors!
Kathe says
My old Swiffer broke a while ago. Several years ago actually. It may have been used for sword fight, or air guitar, or something else. I don’t know. My boys wouldn’t ‘fess up. I never replaced it because I was afraid my boys would repeat whatever caused the first one to die. Now they are teens and wouldn’t touch a Swiffer unless under threat of computer restriction. I would love a new one!
Diana in Indiana says
We are moving to a home with all wood floors. I’ll need a Swiffer to replace my vacuum cleaner! And I love the duster!
sara says
My dining room needs this!
Lorri Reyes says
My wood floors throughout my whole home and then the ceiling fans, chandeliers and my beautiful collections of pictures throughout.
Betsy says
Ceramic tile floors, and every picture frame in the house!
Nicki Bishop says
I would clean my dust bunny covered wood floors (especially under furniture and corners). Also my impossible-to-keep-dust-free-ceiling-fans if Swiffer can do anything with that!
D. Rowe says
I would clean floors more, as well as tops of things…bookcases, picture frames, etc.
Kari R says
I’ve used a Swiffer for my floor for years, but recently I purchased the Swiffer 360 duster and it is absolutely THE best thing for dusting, reaching the ceiling corners and the ceiling fans. I hate cleaning, but this makes it so much easier to dust… that it actually happens more often now!
Penelope says
I’d dust the ceiling fans. This is the time of year when I can see the dust, buy who wants it falling on everything?
Tracey says
I would use on my floors and be able to get my ceiling fan blades.
Nicole says
Oh, man! I would clean so many things with all the Swiffer swag! I could do the floors in my kitchen, dining room, entry hall, and bathrooms (ugh, the bathrooms!), and I would dust my whole house. It would be awesome to win this kit.

So. Much. Pet. Fluff. I have to use my Swiffer every day to keep it at bay. But let’s be honest, I don’t always keep it up.
Jules says
Swiffer dusters are a life saver! My blinds are pretty disgusting but since I have started to de-slobify I am actually getting to those types of jobs. Swiffer duster to the rescue!
Amber says
I love using my duster to get dust and fuzz at my office desk. I actually keep one in my drawer! It gets really gross around here, so I like knowing that I have something within reach to help keep my allergies under control a little better.
Mary says
I love the swifter duster to get my youngest cleaning! She has older siblings who clean toilets and vacuum, but she knows she has the best job. It’s a game to get the dust off of every horizontal surface she can reach. Cleaning can be fun!
Chris Armistead says
We have 7 large dogs that are family and needless to say they leave hair all over, all the time and I swiffer everything – really everything. Getting the dust off all our pictures and the dog figurines with my swiffer makes it easy. Chasing dog hair under furniture is such a plus. I just love my swiffer and would never, ever like to do without it.
Sherri Hatleberg says
I would start with my kitchen and move forward.
Jean says
I will clean my fifth wheel travel trailer from front to back!!! There is so much dust and grime from driving and then parking on dusty roads. It’s very difficult to reach
all of the nooks and crannies with a dust cloth and I want even describe keeping the floors clean. A Swiffer would also be easy to store.

I would definitely use a swiffer for my walls, I know it sounds dumb but they work wonders on our knotty pine walls! I had one for a long time but my husband accidentally broke the handle by closing it in the bathroom door lol. Haven’t had one since my last one broke, but would love to have another
Alison Lindsey says
I clean my fan blades with the duster
Donna says
I would love to have a Swiffer that quickly cleans my entry way hard wood floor. I hate the ‘dust’ I see every day 🙁 when the sun shines thru the door.
Leslie says
I think I’d use it to go after the cobwebs. Don’t look up at my house, people!
Julie says
I may have to clean around piles of hubbys randomncrap- but I will have cleaner floors! Non-crumby non-sticky floors:)

I love that I have a Swiffer Duster at work for keeping my office neat and dust-free!
At home, I could clean … everything. And Swiffer would be pretty handy for that, too.
Myra Blake says

Kelly Hollinger says
I don’t own a swiffer but would probably use it on floors.
Yamina says
Swiffer is perfect to clean underneath my king-sized bed. I can never reach underneath the whole bed with the vacuum without moving the bed, which is a big hassle.
Meemaw says
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt if I just cleaned something with a Swiffer. So much to do, so little time!😜
Johanna says
I would get back to dusting the mantle again instead of using the vacuum cleaner brush attachment. It’s a rustic, unfinished wood beam that’ll cause any dust cloth to snag.
Jessica says
I would clean ALL THE THINGS! Well that’s what I’d like to think anyway. In reality I’d probably use it to clean my kitchen and dining room floors because those are always a constant disaster. I have a 2 year old that loves to shove his cheerios in any little space he can find.
Maritza says
I would clean my tv cabinet bc it is black and shows dust soo easily! This post is very eye opening on storing not shoving and calling it storage! I LOVE the way you think maybe bc it has helped me so so much! We are definitely kindred spirits as you would say!
Darcy says
I’d Swiffer my mom’s apartment
Monica says
I’d love to have an easy way to capture the dust wads that sneak around on my hard floors and ceiling fans. (don’t add my comment to your giveaway – I’m in Alaska 😫)
Sara says
Under my table where you never know what is stuck there with little kids around.
Or maybe it would have been very useful just now when my in-the-middle-of-training son ran off the toilet and pooped on the floor.
Patricia says
Ever notice how every little speck shows up on dark laminated floors? Swiffer keeps me sane enough that I don’t go out and spend money we don’t have on carpet!
Pam Lay says
I use Swiffer products “everywhere” from ceilings (cobwebs) to top of the entertainment center (dust from electronics) to my floors laminite in the kitchen, wood most other rooms except, the tile in the master bath. One time I even used a Swiffer wet jet & washed off my car while camping (worked pretty good to get the mud off the car & camper outside clean). I’m still finding unique ways to utilize some of the other items Swiffer has as well.
Cindy Mellies says
I would love to have a swiffer! We recently bought a new home and every single room had carpets! Every. Single. One! No joke, the bathrooms, kitchen, and garages all had carpet! We are slowly updating and getting the carpet out of rooms that shouldn’t have carpet! Since I no longer need to vacuum my kitchen floor, I would love to get a swiffer to use instead!
Pamela says
I use the Swiffer to clean my kitchen floor, entry hallway and bathrooms, both dry and wet mop all. So easy!

Joellen says
I would clean my bathroom, dining room, living room, kid bedroom, and kitchen floors. Among other things. I would use the Swiffer to clean all the things…once we uncover enough to clean.
Sue-Ann says
I would clean my ceilings. This is cobweb time of year outdoors and indoors. I want to nip any spider webs in the bud and get my home clean for Thanksgiving. Dana, thanks for your encouragement to get our houses under control so that we enjoy hosting family and friends!
Martha Ramirez says
I clean floors, walls, ceilings, corners, tv’s, gaming consoles, computer surfaces, desks, bookcases, etc. Not always because otherwise, hehe, there would never be dust on them!

I would use the Swiffer on my tile floors. Two loveable dogs leave 8 messy paw prints throughout my tile floored rooms. Also, one of them leaves enough hair on the floor, that I could pick it up and make a ball of yarn!! Thanks!

Never had one, but I think I would start in the kitchen and keep moving from there…

If I win I will give the prize to my sister-in-law who is Asperger and lives on limited income. Just today she asked about Swiffer products. I think she would be trilled to get this. Fingers crossed. Thanks Swiffer and Dana.
Tammy E. says
I use the swiffer duster on my walls (who knew was get dusty!) and ceiling fans. I use the swiffer wet jet on my tile and laminate flooring to clean up after my new puppy!
Paula says
Of course, it all seems so obvious once somebody shows you how it is done!
I am a big fan of storage boxes you can see into without opening. After Christmas last year, my husband decided he wanted LOTS of storage containers to put all the decorations and surplus things away. He came home with opaque red ones with green lids because he thought they looked all, “Christmassy”. (We store our Christmas things in a cupboard in the basement where nobody but me is ever going to see them). They drive me crazy! Even with labels on the outside, I never remember EXACTLY what is inside them without opening them up. I think this year I might try to make them into Boxes of Blessings to pass on to other people filled with holiday goodies. Or I might just donate them. Either way is good, so long as they go!
Chassity biddix says
I would be able to get my kids to clean the floor and dust their rooms with this prize.
Gwen B says

Carol says
I clean almost everything with my Swiffer products. They get a good workout in our house!
Evelyn G says
I would clean all I could with the ease of Swiffer products. They would help a lot with saving time.
Jenn says
I used to have a swiffer but I think I didn’t like the way the pads attached to it…has that changed?
I do love the dusters! I use them for everything dusty – tops of tvs, shelves, lampshades, the walls and ceiling above our forced hot air heat vents….
I think I need a swiffer mop again!
Melissa says
You mean with a Swiffer duster I would no longer have an excuse as to why I don’t clean the light fixture hanging over my staircase? I guess I would be able to reach it more often with a Swiffer duster. Not to mention my floors would shine more. 😜
Maria says
My children love to use the Swiffer in our kitchen and bathrooms. And like a good mama, I let them clean all they like!
Jane says
I don’t need this, but I may have to “sparkle” mine up. How many do you think they would sell if they were “sparkled up”. I have two of these. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. Yesterday I bought the regular one because mine was on its last leg. It fits better between the toilet and the wall. Mine was grey and this one is green, so its been a while.
I want to know what they have for this Spring!
I’m still reading in 2011, but decided to see what you were up to now. I have read your book and see that you have a one soon. Is it new stuff? Inquiring minds.
Melody Bain says
Swiffers are great for dusting….floors , baseboards, and walls. I have MS so lack of energy is a problem – I need something that does the job well when I do clean and Swiffer products do just that. Looks like you had an awesome time on your trip!

Clean and dust my ceiling fans more often!
Stephanie Weddle says
My bathroom floor
Steve Steiner says
Swiffer-this, Swiffer-that, Swiffer All’round. Our original has been co-opted for the dog’s room, so we need one for the rest of the places we used to use it.
Fortunately, I’m a random number magnet so I’ll be awaiting your email after the random thing picks me!
Lauren Parke says
We are finishing our basement and will have vinyl plank flooring down there (as opposed to the carpet we have in our current living area). I will need a Swiffer for the floors sure! And dusters…oh, the drywall dust…

Lorraine says
I dust the dashboard on my car and all the dusty parts on the instrument panel with a swiffer!

Connie says
I use Swiffer everywhere, but a fun place to use it is my coffee bar.
Laurie Simmons says
Everything!!
K Aalst says
It would be lovely to have one in the larger bathroom to keep behind the door so the, “I don’t have enough time/energy/drive to get the real mop out” gremlin wouldn’t win, since we all know a quick sweep more often is better than a “the floor is downright scary” deep clean.
Cindy Willis says
I use the Swiffer Duster for my routine dusting (approximately weekly, LOL)
Christy says
Absolutely loving your sequined Swiffer. What fun you will have using it. I wonder, though, do you have to dress up like the housewives in the 50s TV shows to use it, lol?
Zena Thompson says
I use the Swiffer duster for all my dusting. It gets into spaces I wouldn’t normally be able to get into. It’s fast, easy and most importantly effective!
Michelle says
I would clean my wood floors, dust the window sills, clean the fan blades, and keep my piano shiny! My house was built in the early 1920’s and dust is everywhere all the time. Swiffer helps us keep up with the dust bunnies that multiply like crazy around here.
Julie Sepe says

I’d use the Swiffer duster to get the tops of my bookcases where the cat lurks– and sheds. I’d use the Swiffer Sweeper on the floor, where I do not clean often enough!
Laurie says
I think a Swiffer would be perfect for cleaning my bathrooms!

I don’t just want, I NEED Swiffer! We adopted a cat and named her Maui (after our favorite Hawaiian island). Just one problem; she sheds fine white fur EVERYWHERE! If I try to sweep or vacuum, it just creates a white storm! Help!

I have used both the dry (dusting)swiffer and the WET swiffer on my kitchen
and bathroom floors. The one time I got my husband to WET swiffer his bathroom, he snapped the handle in two pieces. Haven’t replaced that WET swiffer but need to soon. Of course ALL the floors need to be swiffed!!!

I already clean EVERYTHING with Swiffer including my kitchen and bath floors, office floor, ceiling fans, car interior, and so much more!

I would clean my kitchen & bathroom floors more frequently.

I have 9 foot ceilings, and I am 5’1″. Between my Swifter extendable duster and my 5’11” 15yo son, I can dust the corners!

I use Swiffer on my hardwood floors. Sometimes. When I think about it… 🙂

I’d use it for everything.especially since a new grandchild will be coming soon.

My hubby broke my last Swiffer (so sad!) but it was really useful for the tile in the bathrooms and kitchen, and the laminate in the front room and hall. I could use help with dusting just about everywhere.
Juli says
I would clean my floors more often since my fur babies leave hair, grass, and little paw prints that need to be cleaned often. This would be a great help.
Joyce Tianello Snodgrass says
I would clean out all the places the kitties and their fur accumulate. Did I mention the short haired tortoiseshell momcat gave birth to 3 longhair orangies?
Lena says
I would clean everything… especially since there’s a new grandchild coming soon.

Some of my storage is still chaos, but I’m working on it. I use Swiffers all the time. I even keep one in my car’s door pocket to clean off the dash.

When I discovered the Swiffer dustmop, I purchased my mother-in-law, my best friend, and my daughter one. I loved it because it could be used for dusting everything. The one thing dusted that sold me was the ability to dust walls. Now we dust walls, the floor, furniture, everything.

My kitchen floor!

THIS is exactly what I have been trying to wrap my brain around.
My pantry in the kitchen is DEEP. So things are always getting lost back there. I am trying to declutter AND get container storage that allows me to see things at a glance.
Cabinets just don’t work- so.much.shoving.

WOW!!! I love your bedazzled Swiffer. I want to see it in a video. I’m new to your blog and channel so it may already be in there. I recently started my deslobification journey, FOR REAL this time. I’m on week 2 now and I have to say that laundry and dishes have been the eye-opening aha moment for me. Those two things, when done, allow me to see other things that need to be decluttered, given away, let go, and all that jazz. Then after the decluttering comes the actual cleaning and storing of things I actually use everyday. It is a process and I’m exhausted, because the initial process is always the most difficult since it means I’m removing layer by layer, but I’m also very motivated and seeing my home in a new light is so satisfying. Thank you for doing what you do and showing us ‘slobs’ that we are normal and we can change by shifting our perspective on our homes and what it takes to keep them under control.
