I wish I was the mom who opened a birthday invitation and immediately wrote the date, time and location on the calendar.
Also in that ideal world . . . I would remember (while out running errands the week before) to pick up a gift. A unique one. An inspired one.
An economical one.
Once upon a time, I did have a pretty well-stocked gift closet. But my kids’ friends outgrew the things that were in there, and now I’m stuck buying a gift every time there’s a party.
Generally, on the way to the party.
It makes my life easier to have a standard gift that we take to every party. At this current phase of life when my boys’ friends are turning 8, 9, and 10 . . . it’s a little cash stuffed inside the cardboard packaging of . . . a whoopie cushion.
Raise your eyebrows and uninvite me to your parties if you must, but there’s just nothing funnier (to 8-10 year old boys) than whoopie cushions.
My expert advice? Get the ones that re-inflate on their own.
My consolation to my kids’ friends’ moms? They’re not going to last forever. Constant use will ensure that your whoopie cushion will be ready for the trash in less than a week.
You’re welcome.
2.00 at Dollar General plus however much cash you want to give.
Best. Gift. Ever.

I’m a 31 year old woman, and I wouldn’t mind getting a whoopie cushion and cash as a gift 🙂

Oh man! A couple of years ago, my sister got my then-6-year-old brother a whoopie cushion for Christmas. He loved it. He used it until it died a horrible whoopie cushion death.
That is a good gift for boys of all ages!

I think whoopie cushions are still one of the funniest things ever (when used appropriately–like not in a meeting at work with corporate big whigs). And I’m 42!!

Once again, it is so nice to hear someone else has the same problem as I do! Just yesterday, my daughter got a party invitation. I told her it was in 5 days and then remarked that we would have to go pick out a present. My daughter responded, “On the way to the party?” Apparently I have made her think that is just they way it has to be done. Yikes! I bet she also thinks she has to write the card in the back of the car as we drive there while I spell it out and hope she gets it right. Got any girl gift suggestions?

LOL, I love it! I have a boy that just turned 9 and that would have been awesome! I will have to remember that for any parties he gets invited to. What is it with boys & bodily functions in this age range?!

My 19-year old son would think a whoopie cushion was cool. So would all my brothers who are in their 20’s and 30’s.

Our boys have given their grandpa a whoopie cushion for his birthday and for Christmas every year…for years. Everyone gets a kick out of it and sometimes they don’t even last more than an hour or two but it’s worth it. (Even the one we brought him back from Disneyland didn’t last any longer.)
Last year, one of my sons got a “shocking pack of gum” for his birthday from a friend. The literally played with this for HOURS! Boys…

I love your blog! I’ve never commented before, but how could I not? My 4 year old got a self-inflating whoopie cushion for his birthday and in the day and a half it lasted (I think the 2 year old bit it) the boys thought it was the most hilarious thing on planet earth. And on general gift-buying, I usually remember to get a gift a day or two ahead, but end up wrapping it seconds before we’re supposed to leave and signing the card as we walk in the door.
