And now . . . I will take a moment to brag about pepper.
Such a small detail, but one that was needed to show my husband that I do love him.
He likes pepper. He puts it on everything, and pepper goes in most of the things I cook, at least a little bit.
Pepper is one of those cabinet items that is never supposed to run out. You can always bang the container just a little harder and get a few more flakes, right?
But alas, we did run out. And then the other container that was still somewhat bangable . . . disappeared. I honestly have no idea what happened to it. It makes no sense for pepper to be misplaced, but it was.
And then I forgot to get more. At least three grocery trips went by without pepper ever entering my mind. More than three pepper-needing meals went by, and many more than three hopeful questions were tentatively posed my husband.
“Did you happen to remember to get pepper?”
Finally, I remembered. And for that, I’m proud.
I’m also extremely thankful for a very understanding and accepting husband.

Lol! You just reminded me that I haven’t been able to find my pepper shaker in ages! No big pepper lovers here though. However, it always feel strange to have it missing because I grew up in a house that whenever someone said, “Pass the salt” you were never, under ANY circumstances to separate the salt and pepper. You passed both. To this day when someone says to pass the salt, I pass both of them. I often hear, “No, only the salt.”
Good for you Nony for buying more. I should get on that!

I love pepper too! You can get away with pepper and salt for seasoning anything if that’s all you had.

In our house we use a pepper grinder, which takes whole pepper corns. I actually have 2 pepper grinders(1 I use for cooking & 1 I use for the table) You would think that I would always have pepper available, but you’d be wrong! I really love pepper, use it on almost everything,so you’d also asume that I would never forget to fill it up,right? Again, you would be wrong. It seems as much as I love pepper, I equally hate filling up the grinders! I mean it is a pain in the butt. I have to use a teeny tiny measuring spoon to scoop out the pepper corns(which are always trying to make a run for it) & try not to spill them as I fill the teeny tiny opening of the grinder. By the time I’m done, they in the sink,on the counter & the floor(not good when you have 3 dogs trying to eat them faster then you can pick them up) I hate this job sooo much,I actually will go several days before I fill them up. Oh, and did I mention that they both seem to run out at the same time! Thanks for the reminder-guess I should see if they need filling, sigh……

@kathy. I don’t like filling the grinder, either, but I’ve found the best way (for me): put grinder in a deepish bowl (plastic is better than glass or metal, but no worries), open the pour (not shake) opening on the jar of peppercorns, wrap hand around top of grinder…sort of making a funnel with your hand. Pour peppercorns. You can see how much you need and any escapees will go into the bowl. Good luck…it’s easier to do than explain, I promise!

Jane, thanks for the tip. I will try it next time I need to fill up.
